New Life
On the last day we were at my grandmother's house, we moved three huge flower pots and a bird bath from her yard to mine. They've sat outside, ignored except for the bird bath, while I waited for the danger of frost to pass (which, FYI, has been a very long wait). I set out the bird bath by my bird feeders, and have enjoyed seeing even the 'garbage birds' (grackles) enjoying a little drink or dip in the water.
For Mother's Day, my husband and children planted bunches of flowers in my front flower beds. This meant they had to scoop out the river rock our landlord had placed there, level out the remaining dirt, and plant bunches of little flowers, in pretty rows, in those beds. It was A LOT of work for them. I am so thankful they did it, and have loved seeing my flowers each morning and afternoon, and I can't wait for them to grow and overtake the beds.
This morning I went to Home Depot and bought lots of mulch, which I tucked in around all the little flowers (which, as the dandelion seeds blew around us, I fear won't help much against the weeds). I also bought several container tomato plants, and some other vegetables to plant in the garden my husband is ALSO preparing for me. By preparing, I mean he's mixing manure with the topsoil, and THAT isn't quite done yet thanks to lots of work keeping him busy.
BUT...I CAN plant the potted flowers I bought today. I will admit, aside from the 2 packs of snapdragons I let Chloe pick out, the flowers I picked are all the same flowers my grandma always wanted to adorn her yard. They are also the same flowers my mom painstakingly planted every year in our flower beds when I was growing up. Maybe I'm nostalgic...or maybe I just know those will do ok with minimal intervention from me! (Yes, probably that mostly.)
We had to take a break due to a certain 4-year-old throwing an epic level tantrum over being asked to drive her jeep into the garage from the end of the driveway. (I KNOW...I am SUCH a mean mom...asking my daughter to drive her FUN! TOY! JEEP! (which she constantly begs to drive) 30 feet further into the garage.) SO. Naps, and then flowers. Wheeeeee!
Oh yeah. And research how to get rid of nasty big black ants which have invaded my kitchen and laundry room. Bastages.
