Today has been one LOOOOOOONG day. I stayed up late into the night/morning (almost 4) sorting socks. I know it doesn't SEEM like that should take very long...but it just DOES...particularly when you're sorting socks for 7...and you have children who have this VERY.ANNOYING tendency to wear non-matching socks. I'm not talking about the cool, funky, two different colors or patterns thing that has been cool for awhile. I'm talking about "I don't feel like finding two socks that match, so I'm just going to grab two, doesn't matter if they're the same length, color, or even if one has pink writing as a WOMEN'S sock, and the other is a man's sock!"
And here's what happens from that point on. I have a couple of children...I am not sure what has happened to their feet...but...it isn't good.
It is SO not good in fact...that today, one of them took their shoes off at my mom's house, and hours after we left, the stank of those feet was STILL lingering. My mother loved it. ;-)
But they wear those socks. Not one time. Not twice. They will wear the socks until they are black, crusty, and could get up and walk away on their own. And may I point out...all of my children sleep barefoot. So they CHOOSE TO PUT THE SOCKS ON DAY AFTER DAY....
::SHUDDER::
And then, as the non matching pair gets washed, but their mates stay in my sock bin...something happens...they don't MATCH anymore.
So I sit there. I had one pile for the socks that, although they have been washed, are just...unredeemable. No amount of bleach, detergent, fabric softener, or laundry booster is EVER going to make those socks pretty again. We're so not even in the realm of dingy grey...we're talking just...just...nasty!
The discard pile. it grew, and it grew. At several points, I thought I should just pitch the entire bin, and just buy every one the exact same white tube socks, and then there will never be a problem with finding matching socks, because they ALL will match.
(This may however present a slight problem for Chloe, as the socks that would fit the rest of us would go from toe to waist on her. Ahh well, Kid. Time to learn to suck it up and cope! Hah!)
So I folded socks forever. I did find a fair number of matches for my husband, Chloe, and me...but I will admit...there is not much in the way of 'matches' for my other kids. And mine...well, more than one pair has been harshly treated by those same kids.
I am happy to have the bin nearly cleared out...and I will confess...even though there is half a bin left without matches, I feel so much better filling up our drawers. Having to dig for socks each day is just not cool.
But alas. It is now midnight. I had less than 4 hours sleep. And tomorrow...children's ministry! Ack! Time for sleeping!
(PS...as tired as I am, and as much as it sucked having to work all afternoon/evening while my family celebrated Christmas with my in-laws, I did have a pretty beautiful morning. I just love my family...and not just the ones in this house! LOVE LOVE LOVE mornings with them.)
